In a film noir, a solitary writer is hunched over a vintage typewriter, whilst the shadows cast by the Venetian blinds streak across his face and the blank page before him. Rain streams down a Gothic arched window in the background, whilst lightning crackles in the distance. Dozens of crumpled pages marked ‘TRY AGAIN’ litter the floor, plunged into deep shadow. Black crows perch on the scattered debris. The glow of candles casts sharp outlines onto the mahogany desk, where ink flows across the wood like spilled obsidian. Cigarette smoke curls in the beams of a pale amber glow. The room is plunged into darkness; only the metal of the typewriter, the warm flicker of the candle and the distant electric blue of the storm threaten to pierce the darkness. A paranoid, claustrophobic, dangerous solitude. 9.16 am.
